The Pollinator Project has been working with the States of Guernsey Agriculture and Land Management Services department (ACLMS) since the start of 2025 to develop a new management programme for part of Fort Field, the area next to Fort Rd that connects Town and St Martins. Originally the site of a brickworks during the construction of Fort George, the area has been managed as amenity grassland for many years. In 2017 two areas of about 1.44 acres were sown with a mix of annual and perennial native wildflower seeds. In the first year there was a lovely show of colour as the annuals bloomed, followed in the second year by perennials which form the basis of the meadows today. The annuals won’t flower again unless they are re-sown or the ground is cultivated.

Over time all meadows like this needs more than an annual cut and the volunteers from the Pollinator Project see an opportunity to make this area more colourful, more biodiverse, and better for nature. A series of options for the meadows, the verges and the area currently hosting elm trees – the treeline – have been and discussed with ACLMs. It’s important however to catch as many ideas and as much input into these as they are developed, costed and in due course agreed.   The Pollinator Project ran a public consultation meeting on the 23rd of July at St Martin’s Community Hall.
